What is Eczema?

What is Eczema?

Eczema is a general term which describes many types of skin conditions and is also known as dermatitis. Eczema is extremely common as it affects 15% to 20% of the world’s population and in most cases is recurring. Often individuals who suffer from this skin condition find that there is a family history of eczema. Eczema can affect a person at any age; however it commonly starts among children 2 years of age. Although some children may eventually outgrow the skin condition, about 80% will suffer from Eczema their entire lives. Eczema is identified by flares (recurrences) to normal clear skin. The eczema flares are unpredictable in regards to potential triggers, timing and intensity.

The term eczema is most commonly used when referring to specific clinical characteristics such as the few mentioned above. The type of eczema is labeled in different ways. Sometimes the eczema is described by its location on the body such as foot eczema when it appears on the feet or, in other cases, the type of eczema may be described by its appearance or by the possible cause. In any case there are a number of different types of eczema with many different clinical terms. The term eczema and the clinical term atopic eczema have, over time, become incorrectly interchangeable. Atopic eczema is the clinical term for the most common type of eczema but is often misused among the public as the general clinical term for all types of eczema.

What does Eczema look like?

The area of the skin affected by eczema is commonly red, itchy, dry and inflamed. Eczema is most notable by dryness and rashes. Rashes due to eczema often consist of redness, swelling, itchiness, dryness, and eventually may show signs of blistering and puss. The more severe the rash is, the itchier the affected area becomes. Scratching the affected area will temporarily relieve the itching, however this will cause more pain and discomfort and in some cases thickened/crusty skin. In some cases, eczema can cause skin discoloration as a result of the healing of lesions and blisters. Scaring due to the healing process is very rare.
