What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition which affects people of all races worldwide. There are a number of different types of psoriasis, however all types of this skin condition are life lasting as there is no current cure. Psoriasis causes redness and scaling of the skin and in most cases red dots can appear on the surface of the skin. Most people who have psoriasis suffer from discomfort as the skin is often itchy and can lead to cracking. In more severe cases people who suffer from Psoriasis experience bleeding and pustules (boils). Psoriasis usually appears on the legs, arms, nails or scalp; however any part of the body can become affected. Most people have flare-ups on their knees and elbows. People with psoriasis experience outbreaks and remissions throughout their entire lifetime.
125 million people suffer from psoriasis. Psoriasis occurs equally among both males and females. Researchers believe that psoriasis differs among different ethnicities. It seems that psoriasis is more common among Caucasians than African Americans worldwide. Data shows that psoriasis is most common among the Scandinavians and other Europeans. This skin condition is extremely less common among Asians and Native Americans. A person of any age can develop psoriasis; however the signs and symptoms usually become apparent between the ages of 15-35. About 25% of suffers are diagnosed after the age of 40. In some cases psoriasis can start as young of 2 years old.
There are a number of different treatments available to help control the number of flare-ups patients experience. Treatment depends on the severity and type of psoriasis a person suffers from. For some suffers, psoriasis is so mild they are even unaware of the condition. People with severe psoriasis can have lesions that cover most of the body and hospitalization can be required. Most cases of psoriasis fall somewhere in between.
